Kawai Novus NV5

Design details

The first thing you think of when you look at Kawai NV5 is how much it looks like an acoustic upright piano. Of course, the polished surface helps, which is common for the acoustic instruments, but also the key lid helps makes it look like an acoustic piano. Other things that look great are the matching chrome details on the key lid hinges, the pedals, and the Kawai logo.

Besides from all the things that make the piano look like the real deal, Kawai have chosen to show some electronics. This is for example shown on the top of the instrument, where some cloth, that protects the top speakers, is visible. This is one of few places where the instrument shows us that it is digital instrument, but it is done in a very elegant way.

If we look at the back of the instrument, we see something that is unusual on a digital instrument, a soundboard, which works as an amplifier just like on the acoustic instruments, and gives the natural feel and sound of an upright piano. This is groundbreaking technology but also a beautiful design detail.

Summary

You should choose this instrument if:

You are interested in owning an instrument that looks like an acoustic upright piano but looks a bit more modern by being smaller and slimmer, which makes it less intimidating in a room.

What colours are available?

The NV5 is only available in polished black, which also underlines how much Kawai have focused on making it look like a “real” acoustic instrument which normally comes polished black.

Roland KF-10

Design details

The KF-10 from Roland is a beautiful and elegant, but also a very compact instrument, compared to many of the other instruments in this Top 5. Something special with the KF-10 is that each instrument is unique because of the wood and the fact that it’s handmade by Japanese woodworkers from the Karimoku company. That makes every nuace in the wood feel natural and makes it unique. The speakers and the electronics are hidden in an elegant way, but without loss of quality. The key lid folds in half when you open it up and locks in place and that creates a space for sheet music and/or smart devices such as iPads and other tablets.

The design has never been seen before, and the matching pedal unit and bench completes the package. The KF-10 is the modern way of making digital pianos and the different wood nuances and colours makes it perfect in a Scandinavian style.

Summary

Choose this if:

You want a beautiful but also a compact and modern digital piano, that blends in with the rest of the furniture.

What colours is it available in?

Roland LX-708

Design details

The Roland LX-708 is the tallest digital piano with its height of 120 cm. The height plays a significant role in the design of this instrument. The acoustic pianos are around this height as well because of the iron frame and the soundboard and the LX-708 gives the same kind of vibe. And the small details such as the top lid can be opened which gives a feel the sound flows out of the instrument, just like on the acoustic pianos.

Other small details such as the openable top lid and that you can change the angel of the sheet stand, makes it pleasing to look at. The cloth that protects the speakers below the keys gives the instrument some contrast but also makes the instrument seem lighter. The problem with many acoustic pianos is that they look heavy and intimidating, but with the Roland LX-708 you get an instrument with the character of an acoustic piano, but with some cloth surfaces that makes it less intimidating.

Summary

Choose this if:

You are looking for a beautiful digital piano that looks like an upright piano, and where space is not limited.

Roland GP-609

Design details

The Roland GP-609 is the closest you get to an acoustic grand piano looks wise, without being one. A lot of the digital grand pianos try to modernize the original grand piano design by making them smaller and lighter. That is also elegant, but there is something aesthetically pleasing when you look at the original grand piano design. The frame that shapes the instrument and gives it character, and the fact that the Roland GP-609 comes on wheels also helps the look and feel of an acoustic grand piano. It is clear to see, that Roland really have tried to make a digital piano that looks and feels like an acoustic piano, and if you are not paying attention you could easily be fooled by it.

All surfaces are polished black including the pedal unit and lid prop. It is small details, but it shows the quality and gives the look and feel of an acoustic piano. They could have painted the pedal unit black without many noticing it they chose not to, because it gives a more premium feel and you really have to look closely to notice the differences.
